Why is it important to dispose old/unwanted medications ?

Today prescription drugs are the second most abused category of drugs after marijuana, with 1 in 5 young adults reporting they have abused a prescription drug.

Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

What can I do besides dispose old/unwanted medication?

  • Lock up your medication

  • Talk to your loved ones about the importance of locking up medication

  • Talk to your doctor about other ways to manage pain besides opiods

  • Ask your pharmacist to fill prescriptions partially
