what is guiding good choices?

Connect with a village of other parents and caregivers who are raising teens and preteens.

Guiding Good Choices is an evidence-based workshop in which parents and caregivers collaborate to set clear family guidelines on things such as substance use, chores, etc., as well as learn and practice skills to strengthen family bonds, help their children develop healthy behaviors, and increase children’ s involvement in the family.

how long does it take to complete the Workshop?

There are five-sessions, with an average session length of 2 hours. Children are required to attend one session (session 4)

Who should attend?- GGC is proven to be effective for youth ages 9-14. If you have youth that fall outside of this age group but are interested in attending, please call us at 509-322-8436 and we can discuss if it will be a good fit or not.

Who teaches GGC?- GGC is lead by local facilitators experienced in prevention work and trained in the Guiding Good Choices curriculum.

How much does GGC cost?- The Okanogan County Community Coalition provides this program for FREE to our community.

Evidence Based

Four to six years after parents and 6th graders participated in Guiding Good Choices, participating youth, compared to controls, were:

- 41% less likely to use alcohol and marijuana

- 54% less likely to progress to more serious substance misuse

- 28% more likely to remain drug free

  • We encourage all parents and caretakers in the home to attend if possible.

  • We ask that children not attend outside of the designated session.

  • All materials will be provided and mailed to you beforehand.

  • A certificate will be mailed to you after completion of the workshop.
